Momos in Downtown Toronto

4.2 · 100+ diner ratings

Momos travelled from the Himalayas into every Indian city, and they have earned their place on our menu at 8 York St. Ours are hand-folded, steamed to order, and served either plain with a fiery red chutney or tossed in a spiced chilli glaze. They are one of the best plates on the menu to share over drinks.

About Our Momos in Toronto

A momo is judged on two things: the wrapper and the filling. The wrapper has to be thin enough to see the filling through but strong enough to hold the juices when it is lifted, which means it is rolled by hand rather than pressed. The filling is finely chopped and seasoned with ginger, garlic, spring onion and white pepper, then folded and pleated so it steams evenly.

Steamed momos come with a roasted red chilli and tomato chutney — smoky, sharp and hot. If you prefer them dressed, we toss the steamed momos in a glossy chilli, garlic and soy glaze with peppers and onion for the version most Indian street stalls serve today.

Steamed or Chilli: How to Order Momos

Order them steamed if you want to taste the filling and the wrapper clearly, with the chutney on the side so you control the heat. Order them chilli-tossed if you want a bolder, saucier plate to eat with a drink at the bar.

Either way they are built for sharing, which is why they show up on so many tables here alongside Butter Chicken Poutine and Chaat before the mains arrive.
